Dachshund Training

Along with that little dachshund body comes a big attitude.  That is what can make dachshund training so difficult.  But should you do your dachshund training different then you do training for other dogs?  That is what I am now going to examine.

Why Would Dachshund Training be Different?

Dachshunds tend to be a more stubborn and independent breed of dog.  They typically know what they want and are willing to do just about anything to go it.
The first thing for dachshund training that you need to always remember is your dachshund is just a dog.  No matter how cute they look or what kind of eyes they give you, you still need to treat them like a dog.  If you start treating your dachshund like a little man or child, you will lose your advantage and training will be a million times harder.

With dachshunds you also have to be more careful not to neglect them.  Due to their long backs and strong personalities, they can end up hurting themselves.  Left to their own devices, dachshunds will can climb and jump too much putting their back in danger.

  • One of the best ways to avoid Dachshund disobedience is to make sure they get plenty of exercise.  These dogs were bread for hunting and so they can have a lot of energy. If this energy is not released in a positive way like a walk or fetch, it can be released negativity in your house.  With the right amount of exercise, the dachshund training will so much smoother.
  • Make sure you stick to short sessions for your dachshund training.  If you try to train for too long of period, you will lose their attention.  If you stick to short sessions of around 5 minutes each, you will have their undivided attention.
  • Start with the basics like sit, stay and down.  These are basics training behaviours that every dog should know.
  • Make sure to train your dachshund not to jump up or down on the furniture.  Due to their long back, jumping is not good for dachshunds.  You can prevent them jumping by now allowing them to be on your furniture.
  • Add clicker training to your Dachshund training.  Dachshunds respond well to short, loud sounds so clicker training works especially well.  Try to start your clicker training at an early age.
  • Try to use positive reinforcement when dachshund training.  Dachshunds respond more positively to positive reinforcement than negative reinforcement.  Try using treats or physical attention.

Dachshund training can take a lot of understanding, knowledge and love.   Just remember to try and follow my basic rules and stand your ground. Having a well trained Dachshund will make the overall experience between the two of you much more positive.
